life curator… i mean hoarder

towards the end of a recent interview with an online publication the interviewer said to me “so would you say you are a curator?” the word “curator” has stuck with me ever since. in my fascination i looked up the definition and it means “ a person who selects content for presentation, as on a website.” okay, i know there is some controversy surrounding the title of curator on the web but i won’t touch that. with that aside i thought, ” yes that is what i do on my site, but what do i do in life?”

in life i would say i am more of a hoarder, a “moments hoarder” things don’t look perfect for presentation. things are messy and out of control and oh so so happy. i literally hoard moments of my life at every turn. my computer bulges at the seams with photographs, my phone consistently has over 1200 pictures on it at any given moment. myes and i write a journal to each other each night about our day and i log journals for each of my kids in my computer. i want to capture every moment. i want to breathe it and feel it and save it forever in my bottom basement stocked with rows of paper towels and canned beans and generic toothpaste. so here is my new series… life curator. join me a few times a month to see the life i have collected and hoarded and how i curated it for you.

my husband is a swell watcher like most guys in southern california. they have the app on their phones, they watch the cameras at the beach and as soon as a “swell comes in” they are there ready to surf. he would never call himself a “surfer” because that is cheesy and  ”surfers aren’t cheesy”. its just what they do, not who they are. whatever, there are too many rules and etiquettes for me to keep up.

All week he had been talking about this massive swell that came in so one Sunday morning we made hot chocolate, bundled up the kids in the drizzling weather and headed to the beach.

he was right. the swell was insane. huge. gigantic. only two surfers were out in the water and one was paddling in as we arrived because his board had been ripped from his body and washed ashore.

the week the swell came in happened to be a life changing week for us. things were changing around here and we knew our time was going to be more stretched and more limited then ever. i will cherish this Sunday morning. it was dreamy and memorable and squeezing my kids in the salty sea air made me feel as though life was perfect.

ruby tuesdays… nail designs for little girls

as soon as ruby set eyes on this  totally cool nails  book (click title to purchase in time for stuffing your little girl or tweens Easter basket) sent to us by Catherine Rogers, creator of this popular nail design YouTube channel,  she was obsessed with painting our nails together. she skimmed the pages and immediately picked this geometric design, skipping past the cupcakes, ombre and puppies designs but taking special note of their awesomeness. we quickly got to work because you know about our special time together.

the best sunless tanners

i have another reader’s question this week in the beauty closet… the best sunless tanners

you see, lacey is a sunless tanning expert because she owns a portable sunless spray tanning business which she runs to make extra money while she is going through her master’s program. BUT that means she and i have gotten so used to stripping down and being sprayed by her amazing product that we have not tested at home self tanners for a while.

we immediately hit the obvious spots for sunless tanning options. after smearing several lotions and foams on our skin we were not satisfied.  we were looking for good color, ease in application and evenness and long lasting wear. we continued on our search. in the end we found these six sunless tanning lotion or foam options that you may not have tried and now here is our very honest review of each.

You have heard it a million times, start by exfoliating but I can’t stress this enough. It can make all the difference in the world. I did a little experiment, not shaving and exfoliating one leg and shaving and exfoliating the other,  before applying self tanner and guess what? The leg that I did not exfoliate was streaky as streaky can be. yikes! there is a little method to the exfoliating madness.

how to exfoliate for self tanning

Lacey recommends this body brush available at Target by Sonia Kashuk or her favorite (and mine since she got me completely addicted to it) baking soda! Both are so economical it is a great way to exfoliate an entire body and they work really well at getting dry rough skin sloughed off and ready for tanner application.

BEST SUNLESS TANNER REVIEWS

Rodan + Fields Foaming Sunless Tan: goes on real smooth, dries evenly and your dark pretty tan will last 4-5 days.

Nature’s Gate Sunless Tanner: This tanner is all organic, goes on smoothly, dries evenly and lasts 4-5 days. I found it very comparable to the Rodana + Fields but with an easier price tag to swallow. $11.55 for 16oz! Yes please!!

Lastly, I really love the brown, not orangey color of both of these self tanners! Love Love.

SUN Sunless Tanning Lotion: this formula went on evenly had a good brown color. It blended really seamlessly and i like that.

Con: didn’t last very long, would have to be applied each day to build up a tan.

Fake Bake in Original: This lotion comes with gloves which at first I thought was no big deal, but I ended up using them with each product and loved not worrying about dark palms.  This tanner has a great color for olive and darker skin tones.

Cons: The tinted formula ensures an even tan but I did not like how the formula spread on the skin very much. It wasn’t as smooth as I would have wished.

St. Tropez: This has been around forever and everyone has tried it. I like the tinted formula and the scent but after trying Nature’s Gate and Rodan Fields I realized how soon the color of St. Tropez faded.

Tan Towel: I have used these for over a year. I love how easy they are to apply with the pre-saturated wipe and are great for traveling.

Con: the color is so light it is best for it to dry and reapply each day.
